Reversed a 50mm F1.8 lens in front of my Sigma 105mm F2.8 macro lens with a macro coupler. No cropping. Approximate magnification of 2:1.

I dug up an old Yashica 28mm lens and reversed it on my Tamron 90 2.8 sp and then added the Kenko MC-7 2x teleconverter also and this gave my 6:1.

The Nikon Diopters are the 3T and 4T in 52mm and the 5T and 6T in 62mm. The lower number is less strength. In general, these do not work well on wide angle lenses. There is vignetting due to the thickness of the lens and the edges start to show more and more softness. They are designed to be used with telephoto lenses above 100mm. The Canon 500D may be a better choice, and I find it surprizing that Nikon doesn't make anything larger than 62mm. For your use with the shorter focal lengths, I would suggest you look at extension tubes. They cost a stop or two of light, but don't degrade the image at all. They also tend to be much less money, and more durable, as they don't have any glass. Kenko makes a set of 3 that work very well alone or in combination.

The 6T and 5T are 62mm thread closeup lenses - they are designed more for lenses between 70-300 mm. Nikon also makes a 3T and 4T which are similar to the 5T and 6T but with a 52mm thread and more for lenses that are in your zoom range (if memory serves me correct on this). I would see if you can borrow one from a friend or even try one out at a store to see which strength 1.5 diopter (3T or 5T) or 2.9 diopter (4T or 6T) is best for what you want.
