I have compared the 18-200 at 18, 24, 50, 70, 120, and 200 mm, wide open and at f10, against the 18-70, 24-120 VR, 50mm 1.4, 60mm micro, and 70-200 VR at all overlapping focal lengths. Testing Notes: I moved the tripod back and forth to try and get as close to identical framing as I could. Shot on D200, converted from NEF with Bibble (which allows you to rename files based on lens, focal length, and aperture -- pretty handy). Incandescent lighting, white balance set off the white paper in the picture (sampled separately for each lens). Note the glare on the 200 mm 70-200 VR shots -- to get far enough back for identical framing I had to go out the back door, which changed the light. At 200mm at this focusing distance, the 18-200 VR is not really 200 (it gets closer as you focus on infinity). I accidentally set a couple of the f10 shots to f9. Sorry. I generally find wood grain a more interesting target than text for looking at sharpness, but have included both in the shots. Re: 18-70 & 70-300 vs 18-200 VR I have all 3, the ED version of the 70-300 and the 18-200 since yesterday. So far the 18-200 seems better than either the 18-70 or the 70-300, and of course it has AF-S (which is lacking from the 70-300) and VR (which is lacking in both). 你好,我想問的是,18-70dx這顆鏡頭的70mm的焦段最大光圈是4.5,想要看看18-200mm這顆在70mm焦段的最大光圈是多少?
若以上請教的問題的結果都是18-200mm勝過18-70dx這顆鏡頭的表現的話,就考慮將18-70dx脫手,直接換成18-200mm這顆鏡頭!不知有何建議,考慮到方便,不用再換鏡頭!
要求高畫質再以小黑三或底片機contax 來拍,謝謝回覆!! 感激不盡!!

我有印象在70mm時也是4.5左右。總的來說，除了耐撞問題、與同樣是被撞了一下，損失金額的問題、以及在下雨/沙塵地區拍照、內筒的大量伸縮會帶入的污染問題之外，18-200在畫質上是完全可以取代18-70的。 |

Here is what I see
I really only did close comparisons myself between the four zooms, since one knows what to expect comparing consumer zooms with primes.
Owning all of these lenses, the purpose of this test was for me to decide if I should keep or send back the 18-200, and if keeping, which if any of the other three zooms that it overlaps should I get rid of.
I really only looked at center sharpness, corner softness, and vignetting.
Here are my observations:
18mm:

The 18-200 has bad vignetting, but the 18-70 is even worse, particularly wide open. Both have very similar distortion.
Both have very soft corners, but I think the 18-200 is worse. This is a re-occuring theme with this lens. And I think the upper left corner tends to be softer than the others, so I wonder whether I have a bad copy. But since I don't have the zoom creep or other problems people have reported with this lens, I don't think I would send it back because of this. Possibly send it to Nikon for a tune-up at some point.
18-200 definitely sharpest in center.
At F10 at 18mm, vignetting and corner softness both improve somewhat on both lenses. The 18-200 does not seem to lose any center sharpness between F10 and F3.5, while the 18-70 really does lose a lot.

Distortion improves a lot on the two 18mm lenses, the 24-120 has a bit more (since it is now at its widest, I guess).
Just a bit of vignetting wide open on the two 18mm lenses (not enough to bother me at all), maybe a tiny bit on the 24-120 too (surprising, because it is not a Dx lens, so we are only looking at a center crop of the image).
Still soft corners all around, 18-200 still worse, followed by 18-70, and just a touch of corner softness in the 24-120 (again, probably because it is not Dx).
18-200 clearly sharpest in center, 18-70 and 24-120 tied.
At F10, similar results. Vignetting completely gone, corner softness improves all around. 18-200 actually seems very very slightly sharper in center open than at F10, which is odd. Other two both improve slightly stopped down. 18-200 definitely sharper at either either aperture than the other two stopped down.

Still some corner softness issues and a hint of vignetting in the consumer zooms, none in the 70-200.
70-200 sharpest, followed very closely by 18-200. The 18-70 follows, having pulled ahead of the 24-120, which is suprisingly soft here.
At F10 18-200 is really improving its corner softness problem -- is now better than 18-70. Same sharpness rankings.
Basically no difference in 70-200 images at F5 and F10, not surprising, since F5 is not wide open for this lens. Once again the 18-200 is just as sharp open as closed, but does improve in vignetting and corner softness at F10. 24-120 improves sharpness stopped down here, but is just not sharp at this focal length. Slight sharpness improvement stopped down for 18-70 here.

120mm ---------- More of the same. 18-200 seems a little less sharp than it was before, definitely lagging behind the 70-200 now, but still solidly ahead of 24-120. At F10, for the first time I see a sharpness improvement by stopping down the 18-200 (though not much difference). 200mm ---------- As mentioned originally, 200mm on the 18-200 is nowhere near 200 mm on the 70-200, when focused closer than infinity. See this thread... http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1030&message=16338422 And because of this, I had to open my back door to get far enough back for the 70-200, changing the lighting and causing glare. But anyway, results as expected -- 70-200 still a touch sharper than 18-200. At F10, both lenses noticeably improve in sharpness (first time for 70-200). My conclusion is that the 18-200 is a phenomenal lens, with just one major flaw -- soft corners. In every other way it beats the 18-70 and 24-120 VR. Nikon has really raised the bar on lens design with this one. For an 11x zoom, it is really outstanding. However for absolute best quality, if you need corner to corner sharpness, it just won't do. And it doesn't really cut it at 18mm. I wish I had a Nikon and/or Tokina 12-24 to throw in the testing mix. Anyway, I am definitely keeping the 18-200, though I might send it in to Nikon at some point, and ask them to look at the upper left corner softness, since it seems worse than the other corners (does anybody else see this in theirs?). And I am definitely not getting rid of the overlapped 70-200 VR! I will be selling the 24-120 VR, since it really doesn't have a use along side the 18-200. The 18-70 I will probably just keep, mainly because I still have my D70s as a backup, and it might be convenient to have a zoom to keep on it if I lend it out or something. Distortion Distortion is awful compared to a 50 mm f/1.8, but great for a lens like this! Most 18 - 200 lenses are worse. The 18 - 200 VR is pretty good as these lenses go at both ends and only has strong pincushion in the middle. It's easy to correct in Photoshop CS2 using instructions at my page on fixing lens distortion. The Tamron 18 - 200 has a lot more distortion at 18mm, for instance. If you don't have PhotoShop CS2 you'll see a lot of distortion at 18mm and 70mm. Just know that this Nikon 18 - 200 is as good as I've seen for a lens with this wide range. 18 mm: Barrel. Use +4.0 to correct as I explain in fixing lens distortion. It's a little bit complex, so it doesn't correct completely. This is almost as good as the distortion of the $1,500 17 - 55 mm at 17 mm (+3.4), the same as the 18 - 55 and better than the 18 - 70 (+6.0). 24 mm: It's neutral, however the complexity of the lens give a very slight wave to straight lines running along and parallel to the edges. 35 mm: Pincushion. Correct with -3.5. 50 mm: Pincushion. Correct with -3.8. 70 mm: Pincushion. Correct with -3.9. 95 mm: Pincushion. Correct with -2.8. 135 mm: Pincushion. Correct with -2.7. 200 mm: Pincushion.
