new micro-nikkor 105: VR works well for macro

I have seen skeptical posts on dpreview on the effectiveness of VR for macro shots, in complete contradiction with my own experience with the 80-400VR+Canon 500D close-up in the field.

A french guy had actually the opportunity to try the new AF-S 105 VR, and he posted his impressions on his site (in french) with some examples shot handheld at slow shutter speeds:

http://simpho.free.fr/forum/vr105.html
http://simpho.free.fr/forum/vr105_2.html

His initial impression is that VR helps a lot, even close to 1:1 magnification. He said that most images he took were simply impossible without VR.

Another really interesting point is that the AF was really fast with his D2Hs, fast enough in continuous AF-C to compensate for translational (subject to lens) motion !! Wow, if this holds true, I think Nikon has a real winner here :)

此君認為防震功能在近距離近到1:1的範圍還是有用的.

105 Micro VR - some samples...

Just a few quick samples taken with the D200 (on a tripod).
The little pocket knife is just about 3 1/8" long.

1:4 mag. ratio (2 feet working distance) f/11.0

A 1:2 crop (50% view) of the above image...

A 1:1 crop (100% view) of the same...

1:1 mag. ratio (1 foot working distance f/32.0

Stopped down to f/32 for some additional DoF in spite of diffraction loss so I probably won't be making any posters from this image. :)

to bikupeter兄:

105 VR as telephoto

i am curious if there are a lot of people using this lens as a telephoto for events, basically as a lighter, cheaper prime substitute for the 70-200 VR. it seems to have gorgeous bokeh and incredible sharpness, but i wonder if there are field curvature issues when focusing at infinity or at a reasonable distance. anybody have any experience with this?

105VR 100% crops at infinity

You can see how the lens performs at distance here:

There are 100% crops from a D2X from f/2.8 to f/11. I didn't find any curvature issues from the limited use of the optic, but maybe owners can confirm.

I wouldn't hesitate to use the lens as a landscape/general purpose tele as needed. The color and contrast are great for these applications.

works very well as a short telephoto (3 pics)

and is particularly good for night photography as it handles point light sources with aplomb

some samples
the first handheld wide open at 1/15s

point light sources are a challenge for night photography ...the 105 VR is among my best lenses at handling these

and one hand held (but braced) taken wide open at 1/6 second!

a fabulous short tele for me

Versatile lens

The 105mm VR works very well as a not-so-short (almost 160mm equiv. FOV on digital) tele. Freehand shots are easily possible with 1/40sec and below. At longer distances, the AF-S is lightning-fast, for macro it is advisable to pre-focus manually. Bokeh is superb, sharpness is good at f2.8 and gets excellent bettween f5.6 and f8. Build quality is like a tank (including the rubber gasket at the mount), lens hood is well-designed and mass and size are within tolerable margins for outdoor work (travel, hiking etc.). This lens may be a good companion to the 17-55mm f2.8 instead of the 70-200, which is 2.5x as large, heavy and expensive.

Some tele shots on my web site to demonstrate the usefulness for both macro and landscape photography:

Problem on VR switch on 105VR?

I just got my 105 VR last night and was testing it when I noticed that the VR switch has more a click and stiff feel to it compared to my other VR lenses. Is this normal for this lens?

Yes the VR switch on my copy of the 105 isn't as smooth/solid as the one on my 70-200. It's a great lens, though, so I'll live with that minor issue. Unfortunately, I only got to play with mine for about a week before my wife took it away, wrapped it up and put it under the Christmas tree.

nope

Smooth and not lose, just like on my 70-200/2,8 VR

Re: Problem on VR switch on 105VR?

I poked around and came across this review/thread:

http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/readflat.asp?forum=1030&thread=18896052&page=1

Quote from 04 -- Construction, Fit & Feel:

"My only complaint would be with the VR button, which is noticeably more "hollow" in its locking action than the other buttons on the lens and also compared to the VR switch on my 70-200VR."

This was pretty much the finding here in my one-week tryst with the lens
