new micro-nikkor 105: VR works well for macro

I have seen skeptical posts on dpreview on the effectiveness of VR for macro shots, in complete contradiction with my own experience with the 80-400VR+Canon 500D close-up in the field.

A french guy had actually the opportunity to try the new AF-S 105 VR, and he posted his impressions on his site (in french) with some examples shot handheld at slow shutter speeds:

http://simpho.free.fr/forum/vr105.html
http://simpho.free.fr/forum/vr105_2.html

His initial impression is that VR helps a lot, even close to 1:1 magnification. He said that most images he took were simply impossible without VR.

Another really interesting point is that the AF was really fast with his D2Hs, fast enough in continuous AF-C to compensate for translational (subject to lens) motion !! Wow, if this holds true, I think Nikon has a real winner here :)

此君認為防震功能在近距離近到1:1的範圍還是有用的.

Nikon 105mm Micro VR + S3 Pro
Posted by    Antal I Kozma

Gentlemen,

I am enjoying one those short happy moments of life, before the credit card statement arrives. I got the bug some time ago and placed an order for the new 105 mm Micro VR. It came two days ago and I have to discipline myself so that I do not waste all my time on testing it back and forth.

My initial impressions are quite good. I was a bit hesitant to order this lens after reading Ken Rockwell's opinion about bad focusing experience with this new Micro VR lens. However, I am happy that I gave in and ordered it. Indeed, it is a big piece of lens for a 100mm Micro. It is fortunate that I like hefty things in my shovel sized hands. One thing that keeps me away from little cell phones and other gizmos that they are simply too little for me to handle. I'll have no complaint about this lens in that respect. It is substantial although not heavy. I've found its focusing speed is quite good from infinity to close range. The use of the distance limiter further speeds it up. In the close range the manual override is the perfect solution. The VR works as described in the literature of the lens. Actually, I feel that it works better in the close up range than I expected. I often chase butterflies, hunt for dewy dragonflies, spider webs and alike. It seems like that VR helps with those images too. I quickly have taken some flower images around the garden in search of some test subject and shot a few hand-held images at 1/90th second and 1/60th second. They turned out to be very nice, holding details well. The DOF was deliberately shallow since I was shooting ISO 160 on an overcast day. Given the fact that this lens is effectively a 150mm on the Fuji sensor, the above indicated shutter speeds and VR did a good job hand-held. I could have not achieved this success rate as of sharpness with my non VR Macro. I've blown the images up and printed crops of 16 x 20s and 20 x 24s on my Epson 4000. All I can say that I was pretty satisfied with the results. There is no doubt that I am going to keep my tripod for critical close ups and high magnification work. However, the VR function and the SW motor are blessings on this lens in my estimation. So is the IF feature of the lens, the lens does not change its length while focusing. This was a feature that I really liked on my Tokina AT-X AF IF, which is on eBay now for a good new home. One thing that I would have liked to see on this lens is a tripod collar. It is not an absolute must to have one but a very convenient feature to have.

It seems like that VR and AF works well on the S3 Pro with the latest firmware.

Well, that is it. I like this lens and thought that pass my firs impressions onto the greater public.

I long waited delivery of mine (a link & 2 pics)

the wait was worth it
it is as sharp as my 105 Nikkor Micro AF f2.8 and has much superior bokeh

the VR is exceptionally well engineered & it is very contrast with lovely color rendition

here is a link to a recent thread of mine with some spider macros I took with it shortly after getting it

http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1020&message=18696832

these were taken using a 20 mm extension tube and a monopod with VR on ...the VR unquestionably helps with macro work and with a monopod (which I prefer to a tripod for anything that can move & this spider is a speed demon when something to eat enters its web, believe me)

here are some examples of portraits with this lens (TimT wanted to know about portraits with it) ...the focal length and lovely bokeh seem ideal for this purpose, and as I prefer doing portraits hand held, the VR helps a great deal

first a pussycat portrait

with a larger size & shooting information here -----> http://www.pbase.com/artichoke/pussycats&page=6

lastly a portrait of me Mum

with a larger size & shooting information here -----> http://www.pbase.com/artichoke/o__e&page=2

it is a bit chunky, but it is not heavy and it seems well built

I wish its front glass was recessed like the 60 (seems sooo vulnerable) but with the supplied hood on this is less of a concern ...I love getting a focus confirmation, keeping the shutter button half depressed & then using the MF ...VR works perfectly doing this & for macros generally MF is the way to go ...the VR seems very well implemented with this lens & any doubts regarding its utility for shooting macros have been dispelled for me

I should get a great deal of use from this addition
(note to Fujifilm: don't give up the F mount, please!)

I received my micro nikkor today, and it is incredible! I'm going to use it to document repairing an electronic device, so here are some "test" shots of

Very nice but ...

I could take the same shots with my Nikon 50mm f/1.8 or Tamron SP AF28-75MM F/2.8 XR Di LD Aspherical (IF) Macro and achieve comparable results for a lot less than you spent on your 105VR.

The Nikon 105 VR seems like a very specialized lens that is probably best suited for portraits and of course your application. Actually I'm certain my Nikon 80-200mm f/2.8 ED AF two touch zoom will do as good or better a job than your new 105VR although it would be a close call I'm sure.

Maybe I'm just a bit envious that I don't have the funds for such nice lenses. lol. How about we start a fund raising campaign for the sole purpose of stocking my lens cabinet with Nikon's best. Who would like to be the first to make their donation? lmao!

Kind regards,

Tony B.

Well, yes and no. Yes, it's a specialized lens that is obviously designed to perform well for close ups. And it's a nice portrait lens. But the lens is no less sharp at a distance.

Having tested the 105VR against the 70-200VR, I very much doubt that.
