new micro-nikkor 105: VR works well for macro

I have seen skeptical posts on dpreview on the effectiveness of VR for macro shots, in complete contradiction with my own experience with the 80-400VR+Canon 500D close-up in the field.

A french guy had actually the opportunity to try the new AF-S 105 VR, and he posted his impressions on his site (in french) with some examples shot handheld at slow shutter speeds:

http://simpho.free.fr/forum/vr105.html
http://simpho.free.fr/forum/vr105_2.html

His initial impression is that VR helps a lot, even close to 1:1 magnification. He said that most images he took were simply impossible without VR.

Another really interesting point is that the AF was really fast with his D2Hs, fast enough in continuous AF-C to compensate for translational (subject to lens) motion !! Wow, if this holds true, I think Nikon has a real winner here :)

此君認為防震功能在近距離近到1:1的範圍還是有用的.

Re: 105mm VR out-of-the-box-sample

Last picture from today, following these guys jump from flower to flower gets exhausting. Think I should just pre-focus on a flower (with a tripod), sit beside it with a chair & beer, and hit remote trigger each time I see a bee land on it :P

105VR: What do you want to know?
Posted by    tao.design

Well, the day has come. My dealer just called me to let me know that they have the new 105VR in stock for me to pick up. As the owner of four macro lenses already (yes, it was three -- now it's four...), I wouldn't say the new micro is something I really "need."

http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1030&message=17601715

But life is short. So, is there anything anyone would like me to check out that hasn't been covered yet?

My foremost interest in the lens will be how it stacks up to the 30-year old design of my workhorse, the Tokina 90/2.5.

Sorry, I do not have the 60 micro. But I do have the Tokina 90/2.5, which rates as sharper than the 60 micro according to photodo.com's tests, so I can see how the new VR micro does against the older lens.

I will definitely be testing the effectiveness of VR for close ups. Will keep you posted.

Quickie VR example on 105mm micro VR

Don't mind the horrible angle, colors, contrast, and exposition, I just pointed towards the dog on manual setting to make a quick VR test @ low shooting speed.

These are also lowest quality JPGs (jpeg basic on D70s) I took directly out of the camera, and only resized them.

Re: Quickie VR example on 105mm micro VR

Quickie test #2. I tested this one in A-priority, so the VR on was at 1/8sec, and the VR was at 1/10sec.

個人測試拍攝的感想:

拍微距時,VR 對按下快門時身體的晃動幫助不大,看來需要先練習一下姿勢,才能讓 VR 發揮應有的功能 :(

105VR: performance at distance

I recently started a thread asking people if there was anything they wanted to know about the new 105VR, and it seemed that aside from its use as a portrait lens, people were most concerned about lens performance as a short tele at conventional and far distances.

http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1030&message=18677712

Today I had my first chance to take the lens out for a spin at the botanical garden. The "real" macro flora images are coming, but here's a snapshot for folks interested in how the lens performs above 1:10. I just saw this subject on my hunt for things of the floral persuasion and thought it might do as a snap -- pay not attention to subject or framing, please :)

Here's the resized, uncropped image:

And here's a vertical crop:

D2X
ISO 100
f/2.8
1/200 sec

The file was converted from RAW to JPG via Nikon Capture, no sharpening applied. And again, this is wide open at f/2.8, cropped from the center to the bottom edge of the frame. Try your usual hit of USM on that and see what you think.

The subject was about 15-20 meters distant or so. The back wall isn't in the same plane of focus as the statue, but so far from other casual testing, the lens seems to show strong evenness of sharpness throughout the frame.

I will be posting some samples shot at infinity later in the week showing a more full spread of apertures, in this thread, so consider this a warm-up :)

Further testing

Further casual testing indicates this lens is very good at infinity -- wide open the image is quite even acrosss the frame with very strong detail in the center, with just very slightly less bite at the edges. No blurry edges here.

By f/4, the frame is really solid. No unexpected, I'd say f/5.6 to f/11 look best to my eye, rendering the very cleanest files of maximum detail.

The lens shows purple fringing on very very bright areas of contrast under normal exposure below f/5.6. At f/8 and tighter, the aberrations are absent.

For those looking for a lens to serve double duty as macro and short tele, the 105VR looks like a strong candidate.

The testing continues.

At the Zoo with the D2Hs / 105VR Micro

The 105VR turned out to be a useful walk-around lens at the Zoo. I was impressed with it's colors and contrast combined with the D2Hs. Sharpness was good even handheld. Click on the below images for the 100% view.

The 105 was a bit too long where I didn't have room to backup.
Sort of an odd family portrait with the lorikeet on my wife's finger.

I think this lens will be quite useful.

hey dave

You're welcome, it's looking like a fine lens. I'll be posting a slightly more full set of impressions later, along with some images.

Yosemite Gallery (large D2x pics)

Last week I had the pleasure of shooting in Yosemite National Park with a few fellow DPR Forum members - Ron Reznick, Mike Worley, Bernie Weinzimmer, Paul Frye and Ron Basinger. The weather cooperated all week, although the skies were without drama most days. We were blessed with a rapidly raging Merced River, waterfalls at near record flows, Dogwoods in bloom and a moderate number of tourists (after Mother's Day weekend). We were cursed with swarms of monster mosquitoes that seemed to enjoy dining on DEET covered flesh. All in all, it was a great week. Yosemite continues to be one of the best shooting locations in the lower 48 states, with a wide variety of subjects, including wildlife, all year long. I've put some of my shots in this gallery:

Taken using Ron's 105mm VR macro:

Question: Is the 105vr afs micro slow to focus?

I have had the 105vr for a little over a week using it on a D2x. I like the lens but for the slow afs especially in moderately low light. I am wondering if I have a flawed sample of the lens. Maybe I shouldn't expect it to focus as quickly as my 17-55dx, 28-70afs or the 70-200vr but it should focus faster then the 70-200vr with a tc attached I would think.

I can use the focus limiting switch and it helps speed the focus a little.

This happens on 20 inch close-ups or focusing at a distance of over 3 feet or more.

Technically what may I be doing wrong to cause this? Am I expecting to much from this lens or is it likely that I have a bad sample?

Todd (tao.design) or anyone familiar with the lens please reply.

Thanks
Darrell

Around 20 inches might be the point at which manual focus might be a good solution. Manual focus will definitely be more useful below 20 inches.

But at distances over 3 feet, if the lens is starting at a similar conventional distance, it shouldn't be all that slow. The only real issues I've experienced with regard to slow AF result if the lens is focused for macro work and then I try to focus it at conventional distances (ie, greater than 1 meter).

The range of focus is so great that the lens will often struggle if it has to go from 1:2 to 1:10 immediately with AF.

I'd have to check side by side, but I didn't find the 105VR was all that much slower to focus than the 70-200/17-55 at normal distances.
