new micro-nikkor 105: VR works well for macro

I have seen skeptical posts on dpreview on the effectiveness of VR for macro shots, in complete contradiction with my own experience with the 80-400VR+Canon 500D close-up in the field.

A french guy had actually the opportunity to try the new AF-S 105 VR, and he posted his impressions on his site (in french) with some examples shot handheld at slow shutter speeds:

http://simpho.free.fr/forum/vr105.html
http://simpho.free.fr/forum/vr105_2.html

His initial impression is that VR helps a lot, even close to 1:1 magnification. He said that most images he took were simply impossible without VR.

Another really interesting point is that the AF was really fast with his D2Hs, fast enough in continuous AF-C to compensate for translational (subject to lens) motion !! Wow, if this holds true, I think Nikon has a real winner here :)

此君認為防震功能在近距離近到1:1的範圍還是有用的.

Nikon 105mm VR or Tamron 90mm

What is the better macro lens,

- AF-S VR Micro-Nikkor 105mm F2.8g IF-ED

or

- Tamron 90mm

http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1030&message=18334618

Probably the Nikon but the Tamron is 1/2 the price. I just got the Tamron last weekend and love it. The normal pictures are to die for. Sharp and the bokeh is awesome. The macros, we'll those are tough.

Just got my first macro that was actually pretty decent. Here are two pics. One using it normally, one macro. I'm sure you can figure out which is which.

This is the 105mm f/2.8 VR lens

I really like this lens.

Re: Nikon 105mm or Tamron 90mm

I bought the Tamron 2 years ago and bought the Nikkor as soon as it was available, my main problem with the Tamron was the "pink spot" I got in the center of my images when shooting on a very bright background at F:16 and smaller, this may not be a problem for most people who do not encounter this situation often but it was a big pain in the b**t for me.

The Tamron is a very sharp lens, the Nikkor maybee a little sharper (not shure , I haven't done any tests yet, just a feeling)

I have not been able to produce a "pink spoot" with the Nikkor.
The Tamron is very slow focusing while the Nikkor is very very fast.

Most people will say that macro work should be done in manual focus on a tripod and I agree with this but when that is not possible fast focus and VR do help.

If you think you might have to shoot handheld and can spend a bit more I think the Nikkor is worth it.

Re: Nikon 105mm or Tamron 90mm

I used the Tamron 90mm prior to purchasing my Nikon 105mm VR lens. The Tamron takes excellent photos. Where there is no contest is when you want to use slow shutter speeds at close to maximum magnification. The VR has allowed me to take hand-held macro shots down to 1/10 second. I could never do that with the Tamron. If you would like to see some sample photos taken by the Nikon 105 VR lens, please visit my pbase gallery set up just for that lens:

I was told by Gromsky that I would get better results with these shots if I used my sb600. I set my sb600 to TTL and 85mm with my 105mm vr lens attached. I tried to add to the exposure by setting the flash to +3.0 and every time I would take the shot it would show a -0.7. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong but all the shots seem to be underexposed. I had to do much pp compared to the bee macro thread I did eailier. You can compare by going to that thread on page 2.

I had my camera set to manual 1/500sec F/22 as he stated would be the best choice. I'm still unable to capture the wings in a frozen state and thats what I'm shooting for.

Would really like to get some help and any advice would be appreciated.

These are the shots taken with the sb600 attached.

The reviews of the 105 VR Micro-Nikkor by Nærfoto Bjørn Rørslett

The 105 mm f/2.8 VR Micro looks nice on paper, but using it in practice tells another story. The lens barrel is now massive and you need a big hand to get a good grip on it. VR does work very well, but unless you use a tripod you end up with a lot of close-ups of just adequate, but not perfect, sharpness. VR shouldn't be used with the lens/camera on a tripod so there is yet another slider to set correctly and Murphy's Law dictates you'll forget this when shooting someting of critical importance or using slow shutter speeds.
Like the predecessor it uses the trick of shortening the focal length during focusing meaning that in a distance from slightly less than 40 cm to 31.4 cm (near limit), the magnification changes dramatically from 1:2 to 1:1. Fine if you hand-hold the lens, hopeless if the camera is on a tripod since you cannot adjust focus ever so slightly without altering the framing of the subject in a major way. This in fact was the very reason I dropped using my 105/2.8 AF and reverted to the manual f/2.8 and f/4 models instead.

Colours are rendered better than the old 105 AF and the bokeh is much better. The "nano" coating probably gives crisper images as well. However, the optimum aperture range is still f/5.6 to f/11, and the IF design gives a slight emphasis to reddish fringes in the foreground and the complementary greenish ones in the background of the focused zone. CA isn't very obvious. much less so than with the older AF version, but you can observe slight vestiges on the D2X.

AF with the TC14E is slow and slightly erratic, and with the TC17E just a bad joke. True, Nikon warns against AF with TCs and evidently for a good reason. You do get VR with the converters, CA isues are added, and sharpness declines a bit. But the lens will give greater than life-size images with the converters. In fact, as long as there is no "G" compatible extension ring in the Nikon product line, this is the only way of going beyond 1:1 with the AFS 105 VR lens (I'm not familiar with possible third-party offerings).

Is the 105VR Micro a good lens? Obviously a lot of engineering efforts have gone into the new design and for many this will be a dream lens. I'm lukewarm and have no immediate plans of purchasing one for myself, although my aim of owning each and every Micro-Nikkor conflicts a little with this decision.

顏色的表现比舊款的105 AF要好,散景也比較好

the optimum aperture range is still f/5.6 to f/11,
最佳的影相表現還是在光圈5.6 - 11
