Agiflite Hasselblad Aerial ZeissT* 150 f2.8

The Lens

The 150mm f2.8 Carl Zeiss Sonnar T* is one of the finest camera lenses ever made. The 150/2.8 Zeiss lens is used on Hasselblad and Rollei medium format cameras, and this version was made specifically for the costly Agiflite aerial camera. The lens f-stops go from 2.8 to 22 with solid clicks on the indents. I have used the 150 on the Agiflite and it handles great and is very sharp, especially on my tests with Kodak Tech-Pan!

Note on this specific 150mm Lens: Serial Number is Zeiss 6392757/Agiflite 1344. Condition is virtually identical to the photos shown, except for some paint touch-up on the back part of the white barrel. A Photonics Hill AFB tag shows a Last Serviced date of Dec 8, 19978. There are two very small marks on the front element, more of a rub mark than a scratch, and, certainly nothing enough to affect optics. Otherwise, the glass looks perfect.

Want a MATCHED SET!? See my current auction for another beautiful Agiflite lens - the beautiful 350mm f5.6 T* Tele-Tessar at:

Zeiss T* 350/5.6

Agiflite history

The USA military used Agiflite aerial cameras and lenses up through the 1990"s for surveillance and reconnaissance. (I"ve seen maintenance labels on Agiflite equipment as recent as 1998). It was a workhorse system for the US Coast Guard and the US Navy, primarily aboard the P3-C Orion until they switched to digital cameras. Agiflite cameras were made in England mostly for military and surveillance organizations around the world and are still in current use by aerial photographers. The lens formulation is still the one used for the Hasselblad in the modern FE lens series. This 150mm lens was the medium telephoto for the Agiflite system and is a wonderfully sharp Zeiss lens.

Great Condition

There are no scratches or dents on this lens, just some touch-up white paint spots The glass looks perfect - clear without any sign of haze or scratches. The last photo shows the actual lens you are bidding on, the other ones are reference shots from another 150/2.8 lens just like this one. Front and rear lens caps are included and it includes the substantial UV filter, which looks like a quality lens in its own right!

A Really Expensive Lens

In the Hasselblad version, the Zeiss 150/2.8 FE lens sells new today for $3,000. This fast f2.8 version is hard to find used. The f4 versions sells used for around $1000. Government agencies paid over $20,000 for the Agiflite camera kit with two lenses (150mm and 350mm) when they were new, so this 150mm lens alone was a substantial part of that hefty price tag. Here"s a chance to buy famous Carl Zeiss optics with famous T* coating in a current lens version for just pennies on the dollar!

PART 2
==============================

Lens Uses

Can you put the Agiflite 150/2.8 lens directly on a Hasselblad? In a word, No. This version of the Zeiss 150mm lens has a nonstandard Agiflite camera mount and does not have a built-in shutter or a focus ring (the Agiflite shutter was in the camera and the lens was fix-focused at infinity for aerial use). However, the lens could be adapted for use in several ways:

The lens is easy to disassemble using only a screwdriver and Allen wrench. The rear-mount screws off of the lens barrel, exposing threads that could be used to adapt other mounts to the lens. The lens could then be fixed mounted to other medium format cameras (with built-in shutters) with focus set at infinity for aerial use. I"ve seen this approach using an older Pentax 6x7 camera, set-up with an aerial lens focused at infinity. It could be used as a telephoto on 35mm cameras, too (click on the above "Zeiss" hotlink and the 350mm photos will show you how the lens mount can be dissambled).

Also the lens could be mounted on a bellows system to provide focus capability. If you used a bellows and wanted to also focus at infinity, note that with the Agiflite camera, the rear-mount to film plane distance is fairly short. For a medium format SLR camera the internal mirror and the bellows would put the rear of the lens rather far from the film plane. The back of the lens needs to be closest to the film plane for infinity focus. Therefore a machinist may need to cut off some of the end of the rear barrel that your custom mount would attach to, in order to get the rear lens element close enough to your film plane. Of course, you could sacrifice infinity focus and simply use the lens on a bellows for close-up and macro photography for portraits or close-ups

I briefly tested one other use of the lens, using a telescope eyepiece. I held the eyepiece an inch or two from the rear of the lens. Although the image was upside down, it made for an incredibly sharp and bright telescope! Perhaps some of the on-line or surplus optics shops could provide a prism eyepiece and a mount could be adapted for a right-side-up, extremely sharp telescope or spotting scope.

One other idea - how about using the 150mm as a projector lens? You could cover a long distance and project a very sharp and bright image, especially on a medium format projector.

And of course, you could just put the 150mm on your handy point-and-shoot Agiflite camera! The lens attaches with a breech mount, sort of like an old Canon FL lens on steroids! Sorry, the camera is not included in this auction. Actually a couple of Agiflite cameras have sold recently on eBay , so there are Agiflite camera bodies out there. By the way, in all my researching, I found out the pronunciation is a soft G - "aji - flight" as in "agitate", not as in "agriculture". Less than a thousand of these lenses were made, so you could consider it a unique collectible as well.

Packaging will be carefully double-boxed for excellent handling and shipping - cost is $20 plus $5.00 insurance in the USA and $65 for insured by air overseas. If you combine your auction purchases with the 350mm now listed on eBay, I will charge shipping for both lenses at only $25 ($75 overseas).

Optics don"t get much better than the famous Zeiss T* lenses with great optical design, precision manufacturing and the T* multicoating for superior contrast. This lens was made by Zeiss specifically for the Agiflite aerial recon camera, with a ruggedized barrel in gleaming white and a special mount to attach to the aerial camera. Remember, since the shutter with 1/2000th speed was in the camera itself, the lens does not have a shutter. As an aerial camera, forcus was set at infinity, so there is not a focussing ring. However, it is one incredible lens!
Please e-mail me if you have any questions about the lens and its condition. Thanks for taking the time to read all of this. For current information on Zeiss T* 150mm FE lens, check out this URL (and for info on :

isaac_chen大哥,

isaac_chen兄
