new micro-nikkor 105: VR works well for macro

I have seen skeptical posts on dpreview on the effectiveness of VR for macro shots, in complete contradiction with my own experience with the 80-400VR+Canon 500D close-up in the field.

A french guy had actually the opportunity to try the new AF-S 105 VR, and he posted his impressions on his site (in french) with some examples shot handheld at slow shutter speeds:

His initial impression is that VR helps a lot, even close to 1:1 magnification. He said that most images he took were simply impossible without VR.

Another really interesting point is that the AF was really fast with his D2Hs, fast enough in continuous AF-C to compensate for translational (subject to lens) motion !! Wow, if this holds true, I think Nikon has a real winner here :)

Well, I was sick and tired by the fact that when I put my lens shade reversed in the lens, the shade itself would cover up the VR, MF buttons, so I could not use the lens in a hurry right out of my bag. It got very annoying. I got a dremmel and cut it off and sand papered for the edge not to be sharp and it does not look bad... Take a look ... The few millimeters that I shaved off are really not going to affect the abilities of the lens shade to protect the lens from flare. I used the build in flash of the D200 but there was also natural light from above because of the windows in the roof. solihi 網路會員	499) 2006/08/20 16:44 Nikon AF-S VR Micro 105mm f2.8G 及 Nikon AF-S 70-200mm f2.8D 這兩支小弟都有但是兩支的功用(設計上)不一樣，所以並沒有特意拿出來比較 105端，不過可猜測 105mm 端的仍是 105vr 略略勝出，而非Micro的長焦拍攝(例如人像)小黑五就不一定輸給 105VR 了
