Have you had enough 105mm VR samples yet? :-) What? No? Well, it rained for six weeks after I got this lens, so I'm playing catch up. Then when I'm not working, I'm taking my daughter to soccer. Chasing bugs is my favorite thing to do, so imagine my surprise to find this lens could just stay on the D70 for soccer instead of switching to the 85mm. Now, I am sure that in low light I'd be putting the 85 1.4 back on in a New York minute but in decent light, I was pretty impressed with its speed and crisp rendition. A tripod is almost always impractical in 'the field' shooting bugs, so this lens is a huge help to me in my critter quest. However, don't limit yourself to bugs. It's a sweet piece of glass good for way more than that! Michelle A tiny visitor on my iris: Naw, maybe I'll try the columbine... A micro spider Fitting in well. 105mm VR does soccer: And more soccer (Don't get me started!) http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1030&message=18525372 |

Nikon 105 vs. Tamron 90 Macro Which is better? http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1030&message=18542671 Re: Nikon 105 vs. Tamron 90 Macro Which is better? Posted by Bill McClung I have owned both (sold the Tamron to help pay for the Nikon) and, in my opinion, the Nikon wins hands down. Not that the Tamron doesn't make great images...it does. However, the Nikon focuses faster and I have found the VR feature on the Nikon 105mm to be almost a miracle. The images are razor sharp and I have been able to hand-hold macro shots down to 1/10-1/20 second! I also like the (slight) additional "reach" when working with critters that can sting or bite. I have a pbase gallery dedicated to this lens. If you would like to see a fairly extensive collection of images taken with the Nikon 105mm VR lens, please visit the gallery: http://www.pbase.com/nc_bill/nikon_105mm_afs_vr_lens -- Bill McClung http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1030&message=18543510 |

Ottawa Tulip Fest and Toronto Photo Show I was lucky enough to have my dad's new Nikkor 105mm VR Micro for a couple weeks during the tulip festival and I attended to take full advantage of it. It was too bad that the weather did not want to cooperate with me. It was either rainy or overcast. This created lots of processing I had to do later on to brighten up the photos and fake some sunlight. Now this weekend I am back in Cambridge so that I can attend the Toronto Photographic & Digital Imaging Show with my dad. I really want to check out all of Nikon's new VR lenses along with the new D200 http://nullphotography.blogspot.com/ |

My thoughts (compared to 60 micro) Posted by Matt F I do not disagree with anything Bjorn said in his review. Yet I would give the lens a 5 rating. This is simply because I do not have the breadth of experience or lens collection that Bjorn does. I think the large majority of people who buy this lens will be extremely happy with it. Obviously Bjorn is not your average lens consumer. Bjorn is dead-on with the VR for macro. Turning it on will give you much sharper hand-held results than having it off, even at 1:1. BUT, it will not give you "critical sharpness". At 1:1, I find I need to keep the shutter at 1/160th or faster to be confident of my sharpness -- 1/125th or below is pretty dicey for me. As subject distance increases holdable shutter speeds of course increase. I can actually hand-hold my 60 micro at slower speeds, even without VR (1/100th is usually safe with that one). Having less magnification helps hand-holdability more than the VR does. Nevertheless, I far prefer to use the 105 VR because it is just a more pleasant experience -- mainly the focus speed and increased working distance. -- http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1030&message=18436116 |

105VR Macro : Anyone try TC1.4 or TC1.7 ? Would love to know how this lens performs with a TC, both for telephoto and macro applications. I have not tried a TC but according to Nikon the following TC's will work. AF-S Teleconverters TC-14E II/17E II/20E II (Autofocus operation is not possible. VR and AE functions are available.) AF-S Teleconverters TC-14E II/17E II/20E II (不能自動對焦但VR和AE功能是存在的) I suspect the Kenko Pro 300 1.4x will work similarly. 我料想Kenko Pro 300 1.4x也一樣可用 Regards Darrell http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1030&message=18624210 Re: 105VR Macro : Anyone try TC1.4 or TC1.7 ? I've tried the lens with the TC 1.4 II. It works, but it's not as good as extension rings in the "macro world". If you need some additional reach the extender is probably a good idea, but the image quality decreases a bit/noticeable! I wonder if that is only in Micro mode, or in general. http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1030&message=18626797 Re: 105VR Macro : Anyone try TC1.4 or TC1.7 ? I tried the 105 VR with the Kenko Pro 1.4x. VR works well but AF becomes really slow. Iimage quality remains excellent, even wide open. I did not try with the Nikon TC1.4 and TC1.7. TC1.7 Pierre http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1030&message=18626002 |
