When I went to Europe last year I brought Dynax 7, 800si and Dimage 7i with 20, 24-105, 28-70/2.8, 80-200/2.8, 1.4TX, tripod A digital camera gives you much more freedom.
Because I shoot both positive and negative films, I need at least two bodies. |

Last time when I went to Malysia, I took 24-85 and 80-200. Finally, I only used the 80-200 twice in the Hotel.

By the way, 19-35 is better for Europe as last time when I was in Europe, I used 24-50 but always found insufficiently wide to capture the beautiful old building. |

Bring your Dynax 7 with 24-105mm lens and a snap-shot camera or a digital camera. Last year, I brought my Dynax 800si with Tamron 24-135mm SP and Ricoh GR1s to Europe last summer, I found that's very enough for me already. 24mm is enough for landscape and 105mm is enough for snap shot. Heavy load will bring your 'pain' during trip (that means you cannot enjoy the trip much, unless your aim is to take pictures only). Furthermore, bring a solid, small and light tripod along, that's very essential. A film x-ray protection bag is useful if you are going to bring high speed films, enough battery and films are very important too. Enjoy your trip! |

I would just bring 19-35 and 50 for my own habits and the situation you may face in Europe. I seldom use tele.
if you also have habbit or using tele.
19-35, 50 and 100-300 are very good combination.
for quality and larget apeture you get the 50. you also have super wide that you may use it most of the time in europe and 100-300 as tele.
Add also a p&s camera for snapshot and to ask other to take photos of yourself. |

Thank you so much all of you, but opinion here also varies a lot. May I ask, is it true that without a sufficiently wide angle lens (24mm or less) one would very likely miss many architecture shots? |

Tamron 19-35/3.5-4.5

“Is it true that without a sufficiently wide angle lens (24mm or less) one would very likely miss many architecture shots?”
The ans is yes. When I was in Japan and Bangkok, I need a reasonable wide angles (17-35) lens to capture the whole view of a temple. Image all the castles and churches in Europe. I think wide is a must.

I've visited Europe with a "duckling tour" before. Honestly speaking, you don't have much time to take photos especially the guide has to take care a lot of people with different tastes. (Most of them prefer shopping to taking photos). Yes, you may visit the Cathedrals and museums in Rome,Italy and Paris, France. But according to my past experience, you won't have much time to stay a long wide, since there are so many tourists that you are pushed to move. So I would like to suggest you to bring an AF20mm f2.8 anf the AF24-85(105)mm of Minolta are enough. But remember to bring one to two rolls ISO 1000/1600 films with you for some of the museums forbid people to use flash (you are allowed to use camera). Be aware of your pockets especially in the crowded areas. Hope you enjoy you trip! |

agree to buy tokina atx17/3.5, instead of wide zoom.

from my past experience, I place most stuffs in hotel/motel lobby. just go out with a backpack with water, reasonable number of films, camera, lenses, windstopper........
I revise my suggestion as 17mm, 50mm, tripod, a very very small manual flash.
I go Europe twice with the following things. 2 ricoh 35R (for 3D slides) Canon T90, canon New-F1 (as backup, place in hotel luggage most of the time) Manfotto manual flash (cost less than %150, GN20) FD20-35mm (above 90% useage) FD50 (less than 5%usage alone another 5% as tele/macro with 2X) FD2XB FD135f2 (only a few shots) Tripods. Rollei Pergo 70 for asking people to help me to take photos.
I use more tahn 100 roll of slides for 19days. (huge usages because 3D slides consumpt double for every shoots.
I only use camera bag when i am on flight. I use ordinary backpack to save weights when going out daily. The camera back will be places in hotel/motel lobby with other luggages.
I only take out a littel big more than necessary film out while other are placed with other luggages when i am out.
we can only share experience but you have to choose by yourself as different photographer get different habbits.
happy shooting.

Thank you all of you for your comments. In fact we're not following a package tour. we just go there on our own. I decided to forget the super wide side, because I already have a 24-105, and I think spending an extra thousand dollars or two for just 5mm wider focal length isn't that cost-effective. Now I face another question. Shall I not be so lazy that I even put my 100-300/4.5-5.6 home? Is it useful in Europe?
I plan to bring the following films for my 24 day Europe trip: E100VS x 24 RDP x 20 RHP x 20 Tri-X x 18 This would make about 3.5 rolls per day only, but I'll also have a Canon A70 plus 512MB of compact flash cards with me. From your experience, would it be enough? My friend has a budget of 5 rolls per day!
One last question. Is tripod generally allowed in Europe? If not, any idea of how I can manage to take long exposures? Thanks all again for your patience. |

in term of angle of view, 1 mm is already in great difference in lenses under 24mm. |

Superman, I understand the 17mm prime is great, but when I don't even have the budget for the 19-35 at the moment, I won't be able to afford the 17mm, which is even more expensive.
Maybe 5mm is really a big difference, but would this extra 5mm be indispensible in Europe? If so, then I have to think of methods to squeeze more money for it. Time is short. I'm going 5 days later! |
