Which Nikon body do you use ? If you don't have F5 or F100, AFS 300mm F4.0 + 2X teleconverter may not AF.
For AFS300mm, the optical quality is better and AF speed is faster than the VR lens.
For VR lens, the AF speed is much slower than the AFS one, but it is more useful when traveling, as it can be handheld and the zoom range is versatile

For optical quality, 300mm, which is a prime lens, must be much better than the VR lens. However, adding the 2X teleconverter is another story.
If without the teleconverter, 300mm is better than the VR
However, if 300mm + teleconverter, VR lens is better
