Both Shatin and Happy Valley Horse Racing Grounds can provide closed areas to watch horses. However, the most closed area are Members' Areas which can be brought in by members only. Also the final (winning) places for horses of the 2 grounds, which you can take photos of horses stuggling for the first position, are also within the members's areas. So try to contact any members of the HK Jockey Club, if you know some. Usually Shatin Racing Ground is used for day races while Happy Valley in HK Island is used for night racings. If you live in Hunghom, you can access the 2 racing grounds easily. 18mm is wide enough for the normal landscapes of the horse racing grounds, unless you want to take photos of whole racing grounds or to exaggerate something. Then you may have to bring a lens of wider. On the other hand, 300mm is only the shortest limit to shoot horses running in the racing grounds. Also alert for the vibration/aperture because you need to use 1/500 second or higher to shoot the running horses. Also alert for the WB adjustment when you take photos in the night horse racings. According to the info, there will be night-racings on Wed as followed: 18 April and 25 April; while day-horse racings will be held on 9 April, 14 April, 22 April and 29 April. So take your time! To Pin Pin Da Da,
Yes, according to the info of the HK J C, there will only be NIGHT horse racing held on 18 April. The racing ground will be in Happay VAlley, HK Island. Normally night horse racing will start form 7 pm to 11 pm. I believe your friends can easily show you how to get there.
No need to worry about the lightling of the racing field/track, which should be as bright as under sunlight (or otherwise, cunnning issues can be taken place easily). However it is artificial lightling, you must check about the White Balance well beforehand. So I suggest you should go to Happay Valley earlier for testing that night.
Enjoy your trip and shoot good pictures!

I have just visited the 2 racing grounds (Shatin and Happy Valley) once respectively before. During the periods, I tried to learn how to bet with my friends and I haven't brought any cameras. So sorry, as I can only share my rough concepts with you.
So go earlier and find the most suitable position to shoot. Don't worry about dinner because you can buy food and drinks there.
Just take care about the white balance is OK. |

To Mr Lau,
I just use a very common white sheet of paper torn from my note book, when I meet with too complicated lightling condition and want to get important photos.
However I use the Auto-mode in my cameras when I take photos with care-free manner, so that I have no pressure at all. |
