new micro-nikkor 105: VR works well for macro

I have seen skeptical posts on dpreview on the effectiveness of VR for macro shots, in complete contradiction with my own experience with the 80-400VR+Canon 500D close-up in the field.

A french guy had actually the opportunity to try the new AF-S 105 VR, and he posted his impressions on his site (in french) with some examples shot handheld at slow shutter speeds:

http://simpho.free.fr/forum/vr105.html
http://simpho.free.fr/forum/vr105_2.html

His initial impression is that VR helps a lot, even close to 1:1 magnification. He said that most images he took were simply impossible without VR.

Another really interesting point is that the AF was really fast with his D2Hs, fast enough in continuous AF-C to compensate for translational (subject to lens) motion !! Wow, if this holds true, I think Nikon has a real winner here :)

此君認為防震功能在近距離近到1:1的範圍還是有用的.

感覺上105mm VR在人像方面膚色有點偏白.

I own the 105VR, so here are some handheld flower shots with VR and the 105: http://jfriend.smugmug.com/gallery/1326864.

o Here's an example of how sharp the 105 can be:

The VR seems useful in hand held macro shooting.
Doesn't replace a tripod, of course, but if the winds
blowing a tripod isn't too helpful. I use a tripod and manual
focus whenever possible, but sometimes a tripod is prohibited
or not helpful due to wind or moving creatures.
The AF-S focuses faster than the old mechanical 105 micro,
and is silent. The VR doesn't make any appreciable noise.
This new lens seems to be the best macro available and
the state of the art.
Recommended.

I find the AF-s and VR very useful for macro, I find both very helpful at macro distances. I would even go so far to say that I will never use a tripod again for macro work, the VR and af-s work that well.

5800 港幣 = 5800 x 4.1655 = 24159.9新台幣

1 港幣  等於  4.1655 新台幣

The VR is definitely not useless -- even at 1:1 you get a significant boost with it on vs. with it off. That being said, you don't get nearly as much a boost as you do at longer distances. In fact, you get more hand-holdability by switching to the 60mm Micro because of the shorter focal length than you do by turning on the VR. Here is a thread with some tests I did on it...

The AFS is definitely useful, shooting hand-held in AF-C to compensate for camera movement works pretty well.

All in all, if you want to shoot hand-held, get the 105 VR over the 200. If you plan on using a tripod most of the time, the 200 will probably be better because of the working distance.

105 VR :: awfully nice lens
maljo@inreach.com - 1 week ago
I think its worth it, but the Sigma and several other
macro lenses appear to be excellent as well.
I like the VR feature and the AF-S is fast and quiet.
One of those tough calls that ultimately doesn't matterj
much. The photos depend upon you more than the lens.

I've have both the Sigma 150 DG and 105mm VR... I will be selling the Sigma. The 105, despite less working distance, is much easier to handhold for macro. The sigma is an awesome lens though, I could never discourage someone from getting one, just I can't justify having both the 150 and the 105 in the bag. VR really does work at macro distances imho. Either way you can't go wrong.

Re: 105vr for weddings??
Jose Salcedo - 17 hours ago
I have no experience with weddings (except for paying the bill...), but the 105mm VR is very sharp and has a very good bookeh.

This is a photograph taken at 1/20s, f/5, ISO 200, handheld.
