new micro-nikkor 105: VR works well for macro

I have seen skeptical posts on dpreview on the effectiveness of VR for macro shots, in complete contradiction with my own experience with the 80-400VR+Canon 500D close-up in the field.

A french guy had actually the opportunity to try the new AF-S 105 VR, and he posted his impressions on his site (in french) with some examples shot handheld at slow shutter speeds:

http://simpho.free.fr/forum/vr105.html
http://simpho.free.fr/forum/vr105_2.html

His initial impression is that VR helps a lot, even close to 1:1 magnification. He said that most images he took were simply impossible without VR.

Another really interesting point is that the AF was really fast with his D2Hs, fast enough in continuous AF-C to compensate for translational (subject to lens) motion !! Wow, if this holds true, I think Nikon has a real winner here :)

此君認為防震功能在近距離近到1:1的範圍還是有用的.

Impressed With 105VR

I received my 105VR last week, and although I have not had time to do anything profound with it, I have been experimenting and am suitably impressed. The only slight negative is that the focus sometimes overshoots, and runs around in circles, but I am sure that I will get to grips with that as I get to know the lens.

IMO the lens will be quite good as a portraiture lens, even though it is a little long on a DX camera.

EXIF data
See you're getting to use the new kit :-)

Curious about the f stop on the toddler shot though. As there was no EXIF data I'm guessing the shot was taken pretty much wide open using the eyes as the focus point. Am I correct?

I also find 105 a little long for some indoor shots, but that length works well outside.

Re: EXIF data
Hi, the shot was taken at iso400 and there was some image noise, so I used the NeatImage trial to remove the noise. That worked well, but it removed the EXIF. I can't remember offhand what it was, and I don't have the original with me now, but I will post later with the information.

I think that I will buy either the NeatImage or the Noise Ninja plug-in, in order to avoid this sort of problem and to have quality and seamless noise reduction.

I like this lens, if I had bought this first I would have skipped the 85/1.4 and saved some money. Oh well, now I'll just have to use both and make sure that I get my value for money.

IMO this lens will be great for travel with a TC1.7. A nice travel kit would be 17-55DX, 105VR & TC1.7.

like that flower ring shot

I like that purple flower ring shot. Morning mystery.

Re: like that flower ring shot

Yes, I'm quite pleased with it considering that it was just a hurried shot. And it's winter here, and it's freezing so it's quite nice to have a little bit of colour left in the garden.

One or two roses left too, but they are not in such good shape :

Re: Impressed With 105VR

I received mine a few weeks ago from sanjosecamera. It is my first pro glass and I am amazed at the quality versus my 18-70 and even the 50 1.8.

I am shooting mainly portraits and the sharpness is excellent. The bokeh is as good as I've seen anywhere. The backgrounds turn to pure velvet. Here's an example.

Taken at f5.6 and 1/160. The bokeh is even better a little wider open.

It has gotten me hooked on good glass. Will be saving for a 17-55 next.

Nikon 105mm Vr Micro and extender

Gentlemen,

Here is a specific question. I would like to buy a 1.4 extender for my Nikkor Micro 105 VR. Nikon says the Nikon TC-14E II is compatible with this new macro lens. Fine, it is around $ 400. I used to use a Kenko 1.4 extender with my 100 mm Tokina AT-X macro a while back. It worked great, the images were of good quality. Tokina and Kenko optics are of good design and made with fine optical glass supplied by Hoya Co. It extendeed the focal length of the 100 mm lens while retained the closest focusing distance. The result was greater magnification or better working distance. So, based on this experience I checked out what is available from Kenko these days. B&H sells the new Kenko 1.5x DG AF converter for less than $ 90.

The question is: has any of you tried the new Kenko 1.5x DG AF converter with this new Nikkor 105 VR Micro? How does it fair in comparison with the TC-14 E II ? Both extenders are of 5 element MC design.

Nikon says that the TC-14E II retains AE and VR functions with the 105 VR lens. Although, as we know, VR function greatly loses its effectiveness in close range. However, whatever VR effect remains for hand-held shots is a welcomed help. I wonder if the Kenko 1.5x DG retains the compatibility with the VR function? I assume it does, since it has electric contacts to communicate with the camera.

Anyway, I'd like to hear about your practical experience with the Kenko 1.5x DG converter, especially in connection with the new Micro Nikkor VR.

Best regards,

Re: Nikon 105mm Vr Micro and extender
I have tried the Nikon TC17E II with the 105VR and it works beautifully.

FYI, I bought the "Import" gray market version of the TC from B&H as it saved me $70+tax and there just isn't that much to go wrong with the thing.

B&H also sells an Import version of the TC 14E II which will save you a few $$.

I;ve *heard* and *read* great things about the more expensive Kenko 300 Pro series TCs which are priced in-between the cheaper Kenkos and the Nikon TCs.

HTH.

Re: Nikon 105mm VR Micro and extender
kenko has 3 quality lines of converters. if i remember correctly the 1.5 is of the middle line. their pro lines is the best quality they offer. you might see some effect on your lenses. if you can test one first do so.

Macro
I recently bought a Nikon 105mm f/2.8 AF-S VR lens. This is my first dedicated macro lens and my first true 'pro' lens.

105 VR macro of caterpillar

Using my new 105 VR

Caught this guy crawling up my pant leg. Placed it on a branch and shot. Had some real trouble focusing. Though the caterpillar was in the center of the viewfinder, the lens kept focusing passed the bug andout into the distance. It took a bit of work to get it to focus on the subject.

Anyone experience this? Any suggestions on how to focus on small items like this? Should I be using manual focus?

Thanks

Re: 105 VR macro of caterpillar

Use manual focus + flash. For creatures on move, I find I must use a flash to get a sharp image. The other thing I tend to do is back off a bit from the subject to get better DOF, then crop as necessary to fill the frame. I shoot a lot around f/8 to f/11 as anything smaller starts to run into diffraction problems with the lens.

If I'm lucky enough to find a creature that is stationary, I try to use natural light since it usually has a nicer look.
