Rain Stopped: New 105VR goes outside! :-) After a two-month long deluge, yesterday the sun shone in northern California. Naturally, I was working, but went on a walk at lunch where I knew some wildflowers grow, lugging along my D70 and 105mm VR. It's been itching to get out but lacking in opportunity. Time was short but I was rewarded. When I think of having a whole day of no rain some fine day, I'm just beside myself. This lens is da bomb. No sharpening applied to these pictures in post-processing, though some in-camera sharpening applied in my camera settings and slight levels adjustment when converting from RAW to jpg. This butterfly was NEVER still. Very orange! A tiny bug on a blade of grass: A 100% crop of that pic: A California poppy...yeah, composition could be better but that isn't what this is about. Besides, regard the dreamy background! I'm in heaven. 100% crop: http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1034&message=18032600 |

Jim, Is this spider picture a crop? I ask as I have a Sigma 105 Macro, and can get no where near as close to subjects as this. It may sound daft, but how big was that spider? Thanks, Westy I cropped it 100%. I did set the lens to manual so I could get closer. Used my elbows on the ground to steady the camera. It's a wolf spider. Not very big at all. Here's another of him http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1034&message=18036643 |

105/2.8 VR Micro vs 105/2 DC vs 85/1.4 for portraiture Having played with the 105/2.8 VR Micro, my impression is that it is a great macor lens, a very good general purpose telephoto lens and a good portrait lens. By comparison, the 105/2 DC and the 85/14 are exceptionally good portrait lenses (well beyond 'great') and very good general-purpose telephoto lenses -- differing by working distance for portraiture more than anything else. You won't go wrong with either of them. However, you may find the 105 a bit long for indoor use -- you'll be limited to very tight framing unless you live in a house with very large rooms. Out of doors, it will be a delight to use. http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1030&message=18054862 |
