To 香港至*NET*超人:
Actually I asked this question for the following reason:
My friend, who is very very dedicated to photography, after using 35 mm, bought a Mamiya RB 67, then found it too heavy. Recently, he is thinking about buy Contax 645 or Hasselblad, and finally, he bought Hasselblad 503CW. I am considering buying his 2nd hand Mamiya 67. My friend also has the Nikon Coolscan 8000.
It doesn't matter if you ask so many questions, I will try to answer it one by one. Don't 吋 me if I seem to be a dull fool:
1. I think of medium format because of the potential good deal and support from my friend. Actually I am very happy with my current 35 mm system, but do wish to try medium format as I think it is the gateway to professional photographic life
2. I am ready to buy up to the price of a Contax 645 or Hasselblad
3. I am intend to do some indoor studio flash photography and outdoor landscape with my medium format in near future
4. I am ready to carry quite heavy stuff to field. It is a good way for me to have physical training
5. My only friend that use large format is you. So I now ask your advice.
6. It has excellent result in huge enlargement. You may say 35 mm also can have good result in enlargement, but you cannot deny that medium format is even better. Moreover, as my friend has the Coolscan 8000 I can digitalise my medium format film without any extra cost. Besides the enlargement issue, medium format has the added flexibility to use digital back without buying a new camera (unlike 35 mm for the time being) in future. Also I think medium format slide project better than 35 mm one (I may be wrong as I never see a medium format slide projecting side by side with a 35 mm one)
7. Because the enlargement and poloraid/digital back issue, I think large format has more economic way to control of depth of view in commercial photography. Consider the fact the Nikon perspective lens cost HK$10000+, I might as well buy a 4X5 system. Also medium format can change film back easily, unlike 35mm.
8. Recently. After seriously learning 35 mm photography for 2 years.
9. My favourite photography is portrait and landscape. I also like wildlife but I will use my 35 mm system in such situation.
10. I don't know much about photography, hence I reading photography website/magazine/book everyday, and I am now enrolling a distant learning photography course

i think 香港至*NET*超人 is quite right in asking some of the questions, before considering the MF, u ve to consider those things, MF not always heavy, and expensive, have u consider MF rangefinder, says mamiya M7, and its series of lens from wideangle(43mm) to medium tele.actually its 43mm is one with very high reputation in MF. Or besides the 645, 66,67, have u consider 69, it's film size is doubled of 645, the pic of size 20x30 is creamy and tonality very good.Fuji 69 rangefinder is the one that i want to mention . i ve a used Fuji 69 90mm , it's very light, ve some toy feeling actually, but can't change lens, and fully manual, no metering, but the lens is very very good ( the EBC coating is also very famous). but... u know , those are range finders , have their drawback anyway. but they should also be considered.

當年我也想了很久,終於選了Rollei,賣了我的Leica(35mm中我最喜歡的,可是和120還有很大距離).用了四年,一直都表現優良,用645片背把相放至24X36吋有令人驚喜的質素. 有機會出來看相,影相及吹水,還可約其他如Pentax及Rollei的Fans.

Really happy to see your reply. Mamiya RB/RZ is quite heavy and limited functions. The lens may be OK to product shot, but not much people prefer it on portrait. For professional life, the only matter in communication with client and good basic shooting technique. Many of the pros still **ONLY** using 135 system, no matter it is portrait or landscape. If you think of perspective control, get a 45 camera like me, 120 is useless on this item. For enlargement, yes, 135 is nothing come close to 120. But 120 also nothing come close to 45. In fact, if you don't often print 20X24" or something like that, 135 may serve most of the need. Remember that you need to pay large among of effort in 120/45 to get the optimum result, such as larger tripod, larger power of flash, etc. Within 120, I think the best format is 67 if you still working quite a sum on 135. 69 is bady class of large format, it has the shadow of 45 and working much slower than 67 system. 66 is only good if you shoot CD cover, or you are optical-bugs! I am happy with 645 because it can 95% replace my 135 gears in professional works. With the budget of less than $27K, I got 8 lenses, two teleconverters and two bodies. If I invest on 66, I think I only able to get 1 body with 3 lenses and two magazines, which is simply don't work with a simple landscape assignment. Remember that camera works in a system, not one or two individual, especially about professional life. I don't know how good price on your friend's camera. Better check parallel imported goods's price better pay. Yen is going low and Mamiya should be quite good price. Also check Pentax 67 if you work a lot in outdoor. quote:
