Re: 12-24mm wich one to choose : Sigma - Tokina - Nikon 1. Tokina 12-24mm F/4. I have this one and very happy with it. it's built like a tank and razor sharp! even at wide opened, Someone here in the forum think it sharper than the Nikon. Noticeable CA but if open image with NC, it will be hard to see it. Little to acceptable distortion, and good contrast 2. Sigma 12-24mmd f3.5-5.6. I used to own this lens. it's huge and bulky, soft at wide open, can't scew in a filter in front! can be use with FF body. I exchanged it for the Sigma 15-30, very sharp but I can't live with the gel type filter and sold it for the Tokina. 3. New Sigma 10-20 F4.5-5.6. Lot people with possitive with this guy, there are nice sample on this forum. if you refer 2 extra mm rather than constant F/4.you could be happy with this lens. 4. Tamron 11-18, I've seen sample with lot CA, distortion. http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1030&message=15040879 |

It is prone to flare - it could hardly be otherwise given the wide field of view and that bulbous front element - but a little attention to shadling the lens with a had or a book removes that one. Where this is not possible, some flare may occur. The one below was taken with the sun just out of frame, though I have partially cloned over the two flare blobs which resulted. Colour rendition, given the field of view, is also very good. It does soften a little at the wide open end and is happiest aroind f7 to f11, but the detail is in fact there - a touch of sharpening brings it back nicely. Its one major failing is the difficulty of using filters - you can fit 82mm ones into the adaptor but it will vignette shorter than around 17mm. I cannot speak for the others apart from the Nikon, which we rejescted as (a) its level of architectural barrel distortion was unnacceptable, and (b) we felt the Sigma was every bit as good, but half the price - and it's a riot of a full frame body!! I hope this helps Regards Ewen Cmaeron Kent, UK http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1030&message=15042612 |

I recently bought the Tokina 12-24mm. I really wanted the extra 2mm of wide angle with the Sigma 10-20, but even stopped down with manual focus at infinity the background was quite soft with the Sigma I tested at the camera store on my camera. What I finally boiled down to for me was I would rather have a sharp 12mm shot than a soft 10mm one. -- Brent http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1030&message=15048557 |

sigma 10-20 does have some vignetting Got my 10-20 today at 4:00 p.m., and of course, it was drizzling all afternoon. I only got 5 minutes outside this afternoon and about 4 minutes outside tonight before some light raindrops started coming down. Oh well, will be fun to play with tommorrow. Generally I like the build of the lens. The only thing that I'm a bit disappointed with is the degree of vignetting which is quite noticable: Here is the sigma 10-20 on my d100 with a test shot of the sky, 10mm at f/6.3, 1/160 sec. http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1030&message=14591694 |
