Hi Kerodon,
I personally only have Nikon 200mm Macro and do not poccess the Tamron 180 DI or Sigma 180 Macro. You can see the thread in 70-200 MACROS,SORRY LATE TO REPLY YOU SINCE I HAVE TO CHECK ALL THE THREADS ONE BY ONE IN dpreview.

Hi Kerodon,
I think you can read this:
What would you do if you had to choose

300 F4 + Close up filter = Great Wildlife + good Macro

or

200 micro = Great Macro

In general I tend towards the 300F4.......

So in your case 70-200VR + 500d = Great outdoor activity + good Macro

I am using this lens with Kenko 1.4 and this combo works fine - the pics are just a bit softer than with the lens only.

Here is an example taken hand-held at 1/640 sec and F5.

Re: Consider the working distance and need for a tripod
agree that a tripod is required provided that no flash is used. However, I handhold / use flash with almost all my my Tamron 180mm macro shots. The technique I used was derived from an article by John Shaw ( http://www.photosafaris.com/Articles/FlashinFlutterbys.asp ). Here are a couple of handheld shots. The first is with my 10D / 20D, Tamron SP AF 180mm Di, 550EX (single on a flash bracket), ISO 100, f/16 @ 1/200. The second is with the 20D with the same settings except it"s f/16 @ 1/250.

How sharp is Tamron 180mm XR Di?
Just want to share a picture taken handheld with a Tamron 180mm XR Di macro. For me, this lens is outstandingly sharp.

Nikon D100, Auto ISO, 1/250s, f/11, Exposure compensation +0,3

Look at the yellow on the base of the flower no detail whatsoever the hairs at the top of the image just plain white due to excessive contrast the white flower in the background to the right the shadows excessively dark then I guess you are right you don"t know how to recognise it.

I do and I"m happy
I don"t think there are any really bad lenses in this range.

I can say the Tamron 180f/3.5 Di macro works well for me
100% crop
